Silver Labrador Retriever Puppies For Sale Are Not Difficult To Find

By Marissa Velazquez

Many canine enthusiasts find Labrador retrievers appealing. Even though there is some controversy surrounding the breed, the popularity of silver Labradors has increased throughout the world over the past few years. Such dogs are not only loyal and lovable, but they are not difficult to train. This is why those looking for silver Labrador retriever puppies for sale will almost certainly be pleased with their decision.

Initially from Newfoundland, Canada, such dogs were originally bred to assist those who earn their living by fishing to pull their heavy nets into their boats from the icy, Arctic waters. Such dogs then made their way to certain areas of Europe, such as England, where dog breeders fine tuned their retrieving instincts. This breed typically has a mild, gentle disposition, and as mentioned earlier, dogs of this type are famous for their loyalty.

As mentioned above, not all animal experts recognize the silver Lab. For example, the American Kennel Club recognizes traditional Lab colors, such as black, yellow, or chocolate. However, they reject the aforementioned Labrador as a pure breed. Fortunately, this does not detract from the dog's popularity among canine lovers, and interestingly, numerous breeders reject this disqualification.

A high number of breeders cite the lineage of such dogs as sufficient proof of their purebred status. Those who argue this point claim that silver Labradors should not be placed in this category. Such individuals hold this opinion because they believe that this variety is merely a cross between the Weimaraner breed and the traditional Lab. DNA tests and genetic mapping were completed in numerous parts of the world by various canine experts toward the end of the twentieth century. These individuals ultimately stated that no one should question the silver Lab's status as a purebred.

Even though there will always be controversy surrounding this breed, such dogs have characteristics that obviously show they belong to the Labrador breed. For example, they have muscular, solid bodies and waterproof fur. Their coats are short and stiff, and they feature wide muscles. Their ears are pendant shaped, and their heads are typically broad.

The otter-like tails of these dogs are one of their classic trademarks, as they are quite thick where they attach to the body of the dog, but then taper off to a fine point. Because they are natural swimmers, their feet are somewhat webbed. All dogs of this type are usually born with blue eyes, but when they reach approximately six months of age, their eyes turn golden.

There are many breeders who make silver labs their specialty. This is why they are not difficult to find in most areas of the country. It is important, however, to conduct business only with breeders who are reputable. The kennels where the dogs were reared should always be visited by the prospective buyer, and the latter should never agree to meet the seller in an alternate location when buying such a dog. Unfortunately, over the past decade, puppy mills have become commonplace. Therefore, customers should do everything possible to avoid acquiring a pet from such an establishment.

It is wise to ask the breeder if the parents of the dog are available when one is searching for silver Labrador retriever puppies for sale. Additionally, the breeder should be questioned about whether or not the puppy has any predispositions to specific health problems. Ultimately, those who choose to acquire these lovable, beautiful pets will be pleased with their decision.
