Basics On Miniature Dachshunds For Sale

By Eliza Mendoza

Miniature Dachshunds is the name given to the mini version of the Dachshund breed, which is also referred to as hot dogs or weiner dogs. The average weight of these dogs is between eight and eleven pounds, although the smaller the dog is, the better. They normally have a height between five and seven inches. There are many breeders, organizations and businesses that have miniature Dachshunds for sale.

The breed itself was not known about until around the sixteenth century in the country of Germany. The name itself comes from German words meaning badger and dog. Prior to the 1990s, smaller Dachshunds were given the task of going underground in order to catch small animals. Some of these smaller dogs were runts from litters and others were created intentionally by crossing the breed with Pinschers and Toy Terriers.

Historically, the mini kinds that were made through crossbreeding did not carry all the characteristics of the breed. It was not until the early 1900s when stricter enforcement was issued for reproduction of this breed. Nowadays, every single coat type is matched with its own breed to get the best results. Wire-haired versions go with mini Schnauzers, smooth-haired are placed with mini Pinschers, and Papillons are bred with the long-haired dogs.

Although these are common pets, there are not as many of the miniature versions available. Still, these animals may be sold at animal shelters, pet stores or directly through dog breeders. They can be purchased online and then transported to their new residence. The cost of animals will range and may be based around factors such as age and size.

The dogs are available in three main coats: wire, long and smooth. They also come in an assortment of colors, including: yellow, red, black, tan, chocolate, gray, or a combination of these colors. Their legs are short and bodies are long, allowing them to sit closer to the ground. The mini versions were created to hunt small animals above and below the ground. Dachshunds are known for having a good sense of smell that puts them above most other breeds when it comes to trailing.

Usually, the animals have a high spirit and are independent creatures. They are capable of thinking on their own and are actually quite intelligent. Every dog will have its own personality so potential owners are encouraged to, if possible, interact with the dog before they choose to purchase it.

These animals are known to live comfortably in urban and rural areas. They can be extremely active and thus require frequent walks or time spent outside. They tend to live for 12 to 14 years, depending on their health and lifestyle. This breed is more susceptible to Intervertebral Disc Disease, which is often the result of obesity. The complications associated with this disease are inability to walk and move the limbs, as well as loss of bladder control.

Overall, Dachshunds are a beloved dog breed that make for great pets. There are numerous people and places that have miniature Dachshunds for sale. Cost of such animals is expected to vary considerably. Those looking to own this dog should search to see what all is available in their region.
