The Technique Of TTA Surgery

By Serena Price

TTA surgery in veterinary medicine is one extremely common procedure in various parts of the world. It is a medical operation that is conducted on dogs only. The goal of the operation is repair of worn out cranial or anterior cruciate ligaments. This ligament or ligaments are fundamental knee stabilizers and any damage to the will impair knee movements. Such basic movements include extension and slight rotation.

The procedure is said to be specific on whom to be performed to. It is not performed on dogs that weigh less than forty pounds. It is mostly done on dogs that are overweight. Smaller dogs are advised to undergo other procedures other than this. This helps to prevent a post complication such as a knee arthritis that may develop in small dogs.

The exercise is normally carried out by a specialized veterinary doctor. He or she is the one who may advise for such a procedure to be taken or not. He or she may opt for other procedures especially if the dog has a special case. They may also examine the leg of an animal and pass for other treatments asides from a medical operation.

The exercise targets to either replace the ligament fully or to strengthen it. The decision to follow any of these two options is dependent on the extent of damage. The extent of damage could be determined prior to the medical operation. This is through medical imaging.

An incision is made at ninety degrees to the lower fibers of the patella tendon. The operation targets to access the ligament from the front and not the back this s because at the back there is a large bulk of muscles which may be cumbersome to navigate so as to reach the ligament.

The veterinary doctor will then inject an anesthesia on the damaged knee or knees. It will be injected at the attachment of the patella tendon. The anesthesia works to ensure that the operation is painless to the sleeping dog. He or she will then make an incision at ninety degrees to the patella tendon. Through the front, they will access the cranial ligament. Depending on the damage, the doctor will evaluate whether to replace the whole ligament or strengthening it.

The maneuver will be done by use of probes and forceps. The ligament will be accessed and an immediate recommendation is made by the surgeon. The ligament is replaced by a special band . This is in a scenario where the ligament is completely damaged. It is strengthened when it is lost. Strengthening is always preferred over replacing it. Stitching is later on done after either of the options is conducted. This is done through the use of a special surgical thread.

TTA surgery may come with a number of post complications. The dog may suffer an implant rejection when a replacement is done. It may also have nausea and loss of appetite during post operative healing.
